The teacher supports all learners in their pursuit of high levels of academic and social-emotional success.
In 2017, Austin Independent School District integrated social-emotional learning district-wide. The mission of social-emotional learning is to enable students to develop in safe, inclusive-culturally responsive, academically engaging, and equitable learning environments that cultivate self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills, and responsible decision making. The image below is the social-emotional learning core competencies posted by the Austin ISD SEL twitter page.
My mentor teacher, Ms. Twining, utilizes social-emotional learning strategies enforced throughout all of the Austin ISD. In her classroom, there is a self-checking guide for students to assess their knowledge and skills. Students identify their level and follow a teacher tip to keep a positive mindset to promote learning and success.
Lastly, there is a sign in front of the room that says treat other people with respect, kindness, and appreciation. This is evident in the classroom in the daily SEL lessons and zoom sessions. Ms. Twining ends zoom sessions with, “If you need anything Ms. Bravo and I are here. We love you.”.
